Coatinc Groningen

The hot dip galvanizing plant in Groningen (Netherlands) exists since 1953. Due to the very long working life of the existing system, the ever-increasing market for shop galvanization products and the escalating environmental requirements, the company management decided in 2006 to build a new hot dip galvanization plant.

Following an intensive requirement analysis, in which Scheffer Krantechnik played an early consultative and supporting role, it quickly became clear that the requirements of the operator could only be satisfied by a modern hot dip galvanization plant with encapsulated pre-treatment and automatic transport equipment. A modern automatic galvanization plant was therefore instructed, with kettle dimensions of 9.5 m x 1.7 m x 3.0 m, which in two-shift operation can galvanize up to 20,000 tons of material per year. Scheffer Krantechnik is supplying the complete transport equipment, consisting of: two manually operated stacking cranes with a load-carrying capacity of 5 tons each and a span of around 12 m, together with two standard cranes with a span of approx. 24 m. Six lifting and lowering stations, static accumulators incl. chain conveyors, an automatic distribution crane with main hoist and auxiliary hoist, six automatic rope hoist drive units (2 x 5 tons) for the pre-treatment and zinc line, the complete, approx. 230 m long monorail system incl. 12 turntables, the complete automatic controls incl. stock management and visualisation. We are extremely proud of the ground-breaking Scheffer rope hoist dive units used for the first time in this project, which are mounted on the turntables, and with a load-carrying capacity of 2 x 5 tons enable a flexible system layout with simultaneously high load-carrying capacity and all the advantages of rope hoist winches. These include a long life time (DIN15020: 3 m, 3,200 full-load operating hours) and lifting speeds of up to 20 m/min on the empty hoist – and when needed, extremely low hoist speeds of only 0.2 m/min, which are highly advantageous for galvanizing. At the same time, the adverse polygon effect known from the chain hoist, which particularly at high loads results in deterioration of the galvanization quality, can be discounted.
